Early 2026 Kentucky Derby Picks
Barnes
It’s hard to look past Barnes in the early stages, and if you want an early bet on the Kentucky Derby, he is your best bet. The son of Into Mischief is unbeaten from two starts at the time of writing, including the Grade 2 San Vicente at Santa Anita.
He is nominated for the Arkansas Derby and San Felipe, and he is an excellent Kentucky Derby form guide. Bettors get +800 odds for Barnes, and if he continues running well, those odds will shorten significantly.
Citizen Bull
One of the more interesting runners in the field, we’re not surprised to see Kentucky Derby betting support for Citizen Bull. He has already had five starts as of February, including winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and American Pharoah two years ago.
Those wins are excellent guides for future racing, and we don’t often see strong 2YO form from Kentucky Derby hopefuls. He kicked off 2025 with a win at Santa Anita, so the +900 odds should be on your ticket.
Burnham Square
Another runner entering 2026 with good form is Burnham Square, who won at Gulfstream Park in December before winning again in February when taking out the Grade 3 Holy Bull.
He will need to keep improving on those performances, but the early signs are positive, and bettors get value odds at +1600. It could pay to take those odds as soon as possible before he runs in the Florida Derby in late March.

Chancer McPatrick
Chancer McPatrick could be the forgotten horse after running sixth behind Citizen Bull in the BC Juvenile. However, before that defeat, the son of McKinzie looked good in winning his first three starts. He won the Grade I Hopeful and Grade I Champagne, so having two top-level wins on his record bodes well.
He’s good enough to bounce back from defeat and aims for the Blue Grass Stakes and Tampa Bay Derby. Bettors get +2600 odds for the Kentucky Derby, and they’re worth taking.
Sovereignty
William Mott trains the 3-year-old son of Into Mischief, who won the Street Sense when beating Kentucky Derby hopefuls Tiztastic and Sandman. The form checks out nicely, and he could make a winning start to 2026.
He’s in good hands and aiming for the Fountain of Youth Stakes in early March. If he wins that race, bettors should expect his odds to firm from +2400 to around +1400.
Tip Top Thomas
Getting +7500 means we can’t exclude Tip Top Thomas from our Kentucky Derby predictions. He won on debut at Saratoga before finishing second behind Chancer McPatrick in the Champagne. He has been patiently handled since, and there is room for improvement.

- Place: bet on a horse to finish second or first
- Show: bet on a horse to finish third, second, or first
When you bet on Kentucky Derby odds, your payout is determined by what you select. A “Win” pays more than a “Place” and “Place” pays more than a “Show”. The payout is the same regardless of what place the horse finishes when “Place” or “Show” is concerned.
Alternatively, you can choose to wager with “Win-Place” or “Win-Place-Show” and the your payout is determined by what place the horse finishes in.
